A state law adopted in 2025 states that anyone wishing to operate a motorized vessel in Massachusetts waters must now complete an approved boater safety education course and obtain a safe boating card.

The certification requires completing a boater safety course and passing a test.  All operators of motorboats and PWCs are required to carry proof of completion of an approved boater education course while on the water.
